A buffer is a solution that can resist a pH change when an acid or base is added. As well as being able to neutralize small amounts of acids and base.

What are they composed off?
A buffer consists of a weak conjugate acid-pair. This means their is either a weak acid and its conjugate base or a weak base and it conjugate acid. The use of one depends upon the desired pH you would want.
